Prevent Hair Loss
How to prevent hair loss
Curing hair loss might be the holy grail for some scientists but, as the old adage goes, prevention is always better than cure.
Although there is no complete solution to the problem of hair loss, there are ways of slowing it down meaning you can get an advantage over the problem before it gets the better of your hair. But it's not perfect – the best solutions only work on about half of the population.
First of all you need to understand what causes hair loss. It's possible that an underlying medical condition is to blame. The good news is, that if you are suffering from a medical condition, most of the time your hair loss can be cured once the problem's gone away. If you suspect you are suffering from a medical problem you should see your doctor for more information.
But most hair loss is caused by pattern baldness. By tackling the hormone responsible for causing this– dihydrotestosterone (or DHT) – and preventing it from acting upon receptors in the scalp, future hair loss can be slowed down. So what medicines can help?
Minoxidil is a medicine available without prescription from pharmacies, which is applied by rubbing it on the scalp daily. About 50% of men will experience a slow-down in their hair loss and 15% will even see a regrowth. However it's not a miracle cure, and nor is it instant – it requires 4 months of use before any effect is seen. Finasteride is another medication, taken in pill form, which is said to slow down the balding process.
But perhaps one of the best ways you can keep your hair strong and healthy is to enjoy a balanced diet, with a good mix of vitamins: plenty of B complex vitamins, pantothenic acid, folic acid, vitamin A and zinc can make all the difference to your hair's strength and appearance.
Baby shampoo has been reported by some to have worked wonders, preventing brittle hair from breaking and falling out due to its gentle cleansing properties. And stay away from chemicals like straighteners – some dry out the hair and can make a bad situation far worse.
