On average we lose between 75 and 100 hairs a day - but this can increase significantly during periods of stress or if we stop taking in enough nutrients.

Dr Lance Owens, a hair loss expert at Metro Health’s Cosmetic Treatment Centre in Michigan, explained that fad diets and ultra detox diets can lead to hair loss. He says these diets rob the body of vital nutrients which, "can cause your hair follicles to go into a resting phase and the natural progression then is that they would fall out."

He added that stress can also add to the amount of hair we lose on a daily basis. "It could be a physical type of stress, extreme weather changes, it could be emotional stress,” he explained.
In addition to these factors Owens says over-the-counter medication can also lead to people losing hair, including heartburn drugs and some cholesterol lowering drugs.

To find out if you are losing too much hair, Owens recommends the ‘pull test.’ "I'll take maybe a couple dozen hairs and then I'll just very lightly pull...if you do one pull test and you get more than five hairs that would be abnormal.
