Scientists have revealed that they may have discovered the cause of grey hair and could be able to develop a shampoo to reverse it.

Researchers at two German universities and at Bradford University have found that, over time, the stresses and strains of every day life causes a build-up of naturally-occurring hydrogen peroxide in our hair follicles.

The researchers found that grey hair contains higher-than-expected amounts of hydrogen peroxide and lower-than-expected amounts of three enzymes, one of which is known to keep hydrogen peroxide at bay. This indicates a possibility for developing an antidote to greying.

One of the researchers says the discovery is exciting, "this discovery is a major breakthrough in the understanding of hair greying and opens up some novel ideas to combat the scenario.”

Any shampoo or lotion designed to reverse or, indeed, prevent hair going grey is likely to be a big success on the open market, but any developments are likely to be years away.

The researchers says that he use of hydrogen peroxide dyes among older women may speed up the greying process, but younger women should not worry about using these dyes.
