A Sunderland woman who stood to lose her hair just weeks before her wedding has spoken out in support of an initiative aimed at giving hair loss sufferers back their confidence.

Debra Vincent, 39, was diagnosed with breast cancer earlier this year, and was told the chemotherapy could make her hair fall out. She said: "There was a 50 per cent chance I would lose my hair before the wedding and I wanted to psychologically prepare myself."

It was then that she came across the My New Hair initiative website. "I was given an NHS voucher to use at a place in Newcastle, but the wigs are off the shelf and very unrealistic. I told my Macmillan nurse and she mentioned that Trevor Sorbie was training people around the country to cut wigs."

My New Hair was founded by Mr. Sorbie in June 2006, after he supported a relative through cancer-related hair loss.

The not-for-profit organisation aims to have at least 400 salons nationally offering advice and a wig customisation service to clients suffering medical hair loss, as a result of chemotherapy or alopecia.
