A Welsh schoolboy who suffers from the hair loss condition alopecia was robbed of his rare coins collection when thieves broke into his living room.

Joel Williams, 12, from St Mellons in Cardiff, started collecting rare coins and notes when he was off school recovering from stress-related alopecia.

The collection started with a Scottish £20 note and a silver £5 coin, and grew to include a £100 First Trust note from Ireland and 12 £5 coins and notes from countries around the world.

Joel said: "My favourite was the First Trust £100 note. I'm really disappointed that it has gone. It was a hobby when I was off with alopecia."

Joel's mum Suzanne, 40, said collecting the notes had helped her son overcome his stress-related alopecia. She said: "He did all the research. He knew about all the currencies of all the countries and when he got his pocket money, he would say I want that note. On Thursday, he was in the front room counting it all and in the afternoon someone must have seen it and smashed the window and stolen it all. Joel, bless him, was so good about it. He told me: 'Everyone's fine. It's just money'."
