A new survey has been conducted to find out what men in Thailand think about baldness. 469 men aged 25 to 40, including 262 traffic policemen 105 golfers and 102 engineers, were polled about their attitudes to hair loss and baldness.

The results of the Suan Dusit Poll survey revealed conflicting opinions. When asked about famous men who looked "cool" without hair, respondents decided that Thai journalist Suthichai Yoon was the world's coolest bald man. Second and third place went to Hollywood star Bruce Willis and Bangkok-based Australian media personality Andrew Biggs respectively.

However, when asked about how they would feel about experiencing hair loss for themselves, the results were less positive. One third of respondents said to lose their hair would cause them embarrassment and loss of confidence. Nearly half of the respondents said that they would keep their hair short or shaved if they experienced moderate hair loss.

The survey also revealed common misconceptions amongst Thai males about the causes of hair loss. Sixty-nine per cent of the traffic policemen surveyed said they thought wearing a helmet could cause or accelerate hair loss.

Dr Udomsak Hoonwijit of Chulalongkorn Hospital said: "Numerous medical studies from around the world have confirmed that 95 per cent of male hair loss is due to genetic causes."
