A hair loss drug that led to the suspension of footballers Stan Lazaridis and Romário de Souza Faria has been removed from the World Anti-Doping Agency's banned list.
Finasteride is used to treat hair loss and scalp problems. In 2005, the drug was banned by the World Anti-Doping Agency because of concerns it could mask the use of steroids.
However, further research has shown that athletes cannot gain any advantage from the drug. Finasteride has therefore been removed from WADA's banned list. The change will take effect from January 1st 2009.
Lazaridis received a twelve month ban for using Finasteride as part of a prescribed treatment for the hair loss condition alopecia. Romario received a four month ban in 2007 for testing positive to finasteride, which was an ingredient in an anti-hair-loss product he was using at the time.
Romario was named as one of the Top 125 greatest living footballers as part of FIFA's 100th anniversary celebration. He tested positive for finasteride while playing for Brazilian club Vasco da Gama. He officially announced his retirement from professional football on April 15, 2008, aged 42.
